Fast setup
I'm two hours from good water and when I get there I don't want to spend extra time in the parking lot. To that end, I've tried to outfit the boat so as to facilitate a fast and easy setup:
- Miracle 20 tiller connectors. If you are going to remove your rudders (which I do), there is no other way to go. The whole rudder system can go on the boat in minutes.
- Jib attachment: Ronstan locking halyard shackle (HC part 92870000) connected directly to the lower block of the Aussie halyard. Solid ball pin for the jib tack. At the moment I don't have a good solution for the clew.
- Tie-down [future]: a system similar to the Hobie Custom Tie-down, using over-center buckes to lock the boat in place with preset strap lengths.
- Sail bag [future]: with zip on the side so the sails can go straight in and out without rolling.
Then of course you have the big part: the choreography of the crew to actually do it all. My approach is to get the mast up first thing so everyone has something to work on afterward. Here's my starting point:
Skipper and crew:
- free the shrouds and trapezes
- install mast bearing
- untie mast
- step mast with quick-pin in forestay adjuster
Skipper
- remove stepping pin
- unbag sails
- rig main halyard and sheet
- hoist sails if possible
Crew:
- unstrap boat
- disentangle trap lines and connect shock cords
- install rudders (in up position) and crossbar
- put tiller extension on tramp
- check drain plugs
- put jackets and harnesses on tramp
The biggest time-killers are the sail bag and the tie-downs.
